What is Christian Science?

What is Christian Science
Christian Science is a 19th century religion founded by Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910). From the Christian Science Website: “In 1866, after many years of study, Mary Baker Eddy discovered what she considered to be the Science of the Christianity which Jesus taught and lived. She dedicated herself to teaching, preaching, and healing others through this system for applying spiritual laws—Christian Science—and in 1875 she published her primary book about it, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. By 1879, she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, “to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing” (Church Manual, p.17). Though it is not necessary to be a church member to study Christian Science, today, there are members in over 130 countries and democratically run churches in over 70 countries.”

Christian Science Tenets of Faith
  1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.
  2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness.
  3. We acknowledge God’s forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.
  4. We acknowledge Jesus’ atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man’s unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death.
  5. We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.
  6. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

What is the Difference?

Often people will ask what’s the difference between Christian Science and biblical Christianity. The differences are both subtle and profound. Here are some foundational differences:

  • Though much of the language is the same, the definitions of the words are different.
  • Biblical Christianity relies solely on Scripture which tells a unified story of redemption while Christian Science understands scripture only through the lens of Mary Baker Eddy’s, metaphysical approach, explained in Science and Health with Key to the Scripture. Though Christian Science is purportedly based on Scripture, their main authority is Mary Baker Eddy.
  • While Christian Science teaches that Jesus is the savior, they know him to be merely a man, a good teacher, and a “Way-shower.” Biblical Christianity knows Jesus as the Savior, fully God and fully man, and the second member of the trinity.

What is Prayer?

In your faith journey it is easy to get caught up in the details while not realizing that at the heart of your search is a relationship. The scriptures reveal a real, living, and personal God with whom we can have a relationship. What’s even more remarkable is that as you are seeking God, He is actually already pursuing you. At its most basic prayer is speaking to God about himself, ourselves, and people and circumstances in our world. When we pray, we are speaking with the real, living, personal God of scripture, and expressing thanks and praise, offering up our desires, confessing our sins, and asking for His help. I encourage you to personally talk with God; I encourage you to pray. Please know that we are praying that you might come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
